As much as I would like to eat cake all day long, sometimes one is in the mood for a savoury bite too.

I fancied a foray in to savoury morsels one Saturday morning, and my foodie school friend Jess kindly obliged as taste developer with me for the day.

We made a couple of different tasty pastries, with the theme of what could accompany a long drink or locally brewed beer as a bar-style snack.

Cheddar cheese & mustard men and puff pastry straws

This is what we came up with, working clockwise from the cheese and mustard men:

  • Cheddar cheese and wholegrain mustard men with sesame seed topping
  • Pesto and parmesan puff pastry straws (in glass)
  • Cheesy hearts with sesame seed topping
  • Goat’s cheese and red pepper tapenade straws

Moving on, we wanted something that was a little more substantial than the pastry bites, but still a light snack to accompany a bar drink…

Mackerel pate with bread spoons

…we came up with mackerel pate shots and bread spoons. Dig in and eat the whole thing! Perfect for sharing, or just for one!

Last one, filo pastry spinach and ricotta cigars. Delicious warm from the oven with a faint scent of nutmeg eminating from these little cigars, or fine to store in an airtight container for a couple of days. They retain their crisp outer shell with soft filling and almost feel quite healthy to eat!
